Jhalong&Bindu

Overview:   Jhalong is a small hill station located in the Indo-Bhutan border area on the bank of river Jaldhaka in Kalimpong Sub Division of Darjeeling district. One have to reach Jhalong through Chapramari Wildlife Santuary(WLS). which is famous for it's Bio-diversity and also for various species of hill birds and migratory birds. Some of the rare species birds like Brown dipper, crested kingfisher, slaty backed forktail, Eurasian wryneck, Hodgson’s redstart, little forktail, Rufous necked laughing thrush and migratory water fowl etc are often found here. A hydroelectric Power project is constructed on Jaldhaka River which is used to enter into Bhutan. Jhalong is rich in natural beauty. There are several places for sightseeing too. One of the favorite activities is Trekking in this area. If anyone likes adventure sports, one can go for a small trekking towards Bindu (8 KM) or long trekking towards Today (21 KM) & Tangta.  You may feel refreshed after listening the murmur of the river caused by Jaldhaka. Today is an hour drive from Jhalong through Paren. There is a small monastery and church (St. Nicholas).  Tangta is also known as gateway to the beautiful Rochella peak. If anyone like more adventure it is recommended to visit Rochella peak. There are several natural lakes. It will be around 8-10 hour climb from Tangta. Horses will be available from Tangta for carrying goods. Neora Valley National Park is 25 km from Jhalong.  It is famous for cardamom production. It is also famous for Medicinal plants. There are two separate garden viz. Chamelidevi Ayurvedic Garden 1 & 2.  It is worth spending time there. You can also have a bath at Dabai Khola (River) where water contains sulphar and other minerals which is good for skin.



How to reach : Jhalong is 24 km from Khunia more, 53 km from Gorumara National Park  and 38 km from Malbazar. From all the places it is possible to reach at Jhalong within 1hr -1.30 hrs depending on the road condition and car type. There are daily bus/trekker route also from samsing through Chalsa, but limited.



Where to stay: You may stay at WBFDC cottages. It’s really beautiful and located at the riverside of Jaldhaka. Private hotel and lodge with food facility also available there.
