Dooars

Dooars is the gate way to the North Eastern part of  India and Bhutan where nature is just  awesome and have all the potential to rejuvenate one with its natural beauty and climate . Duar means  'door’ in Assamese, Bengali, Nepali & Telugu languages. The altitude of Dooars varies from 90 m to 1750 m.The area spread across 5200 sq km (approx) and a major part falls in Jalpaiguri district. From beautiful hills to evergreen forests and from wonderful river banks to marvelous teagardens the dooars is always a center of attraction for the tourist from almost every part of the world.

The major river is Tista. Among other rivers are like the Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsha, Sankosh, Dyna,Karatoya, Raidak, and Kaljani. The temperature varies from 10-190 C during winter to 25-330 c during summer and The average rainfall is about 3,500 mm. Monsoon generally starts from the middle of May and continues till the end of September. Any season is best to visit Dooars except monsoon. All the wildlife sanctuary/forest are generally remain closed between mid June(15th June) to mid September(15th September).

The native people in this area are mostly tribals like the Rabha, the Mech, the Toto, the Kooch Rajbongshi (Coochbehari), the Tamang/Murmi, the Limbu, the Lepcha in Bengal. Apart from the tribal population, a large Bengali population (mostly displaced from the Bangladesh) also populate the Dooars. The Oraons, Mundas, Kharia  Mahali, Lohara and Chik Baraik are the tribals from these areas who are generally employed at the various tea gardens of Dooars.




The most important city near Dooars is Siliguri which is well connected to rest of the country by air, road, railways etc. The other Major cities are like Cooch behar,Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Malbazar, Mainaguri, Birpara, Falakata, Also, the one of the commercial capital of Bhutan, Phuentsholing, near Jaigaon, can be considered a part of this region. 

It is almost impossible to explore the Dooars and its adjacent area in a single trip, but one can plan well before travelling in this area so that most of the part of a certain area can be covered in a single trip. 


One is recommended to have local foods specially river fish and fresh vegetables while travelling this area.
